Our story

A class that learned to teach itself.

SATurday Scholars began as a simple idea from Chiara “Kiki” Zimmermann, a high school senior in Brooklyn: the SAT opens doors to universities and scholarships, and good preparation shouldn’t depend on where you live or what you can pay.

So every Saturday, she logged on with students at Standard High School in Effurun, Delta State, Nigeria. The first sessions looked like ordinary lessons. Within weeks, they didn’t.

Students started answering before the question was finished, arguing over grammar rules, and explaining strategies to each other better than any slide could. The teacher stepped back; the students stepped forward.

Today the program trains local tutors and grows the way it started — one student teaching the next.
